One of the collections I was most excited about this Christmas in July season was the new Spellbinders Christmas Cats Collection by Yana Smakula. As soon as it was released, I placed my order, and when it finally arrived, I couldn’t wait to start creating with it.
The inspiration for this card actually comes from my parents and their lifelong adventures of celebrating Christmas with cats. They’ve always had both dogs and cats, and putting up a Christmas tree has often been a challenge! More than once, the tree ended up on the floor after a curious cat decided to investigate it. For several years, they even attached a decorated arrangement of pine branches to the ceiling so they could still enjoy something festive while keeping it safely out of reach. That memory inspired this playful little scene.
For the main design, I used the Christmas Cats Dies and Christmas Cats Accessories Dies to create the two mischievous cats, the Christmas tree, and the tiny Santa hats. The window, curtain, and cat bed were all created with the Christmas Cats Window View Dies .
I die cut almost every element from The Full 48 ColorWheel Cardstock Pack A2 – 1 Each. The only exception was the wall, which I created from Altenew Crafty Necessities: Misty Sage Cardstock.
To create the snowy view outside the window, I hot foiled the Sprinkled Confetti Press Plates onto dark navy cardstock using Opaque White Foil. I then added a vellum die cut over the snowy background to create the look of window glass. The vellum also softened the very dark navy cardstock and the bright foiled snow. I added several details die cut from gold foil cardstock, including some of the tree decorations and the star.
Once all the pieces were die cut and assembled, I started building the scene on the card. Some elements were adhered flat with liquid adhesive, while others were popped up using Regular Black Adhesive Foam Squares and Thin Black Adhesive Foam Squares. I used the different thicknesses depending on the layers underneath each element so everything would remain properly leveled.
For the greeting, I used the Meowy Christmas Sentiments Press + Foil Plates & Die Set. I hot foiled the sentiment onto red cardstock using Opaque White Foil, die cut it, and popped it up over the window to finish the design.
This card is all about building a fun little story with die-cut pieces rather than using one specific technique. I had so much fun assembling the individual elements and then bringing the entire Christmas cat scene together.
