How to Create a Chalkboard Card with Colorful Stamped Images

Hello friends!

This time of year always feels like a mix of seasons in the cardmaking world. Holiday crafting is already underway, but there’s still a little time left for summer-inspired projects, and this colorful cocktail card seemed like the perfect one to share.

One of my favorite techniques is creating a chalkboard look, and this cocktail-themed card was the perfect excuse to use it again. The dark background makes the colorful drinks stand out, while the soft white checkerboard effect gives the panel the look of a well-used restaurant chalkboard.

To create the image, I started with a piece of white cardstock and heat embossed the outlines from the Papertrey Ink Here’s To You Stamp Set in white. Since each drink is a separate stamp, I carefully brushed away the embossing powder anywhere the glasses overlapped so the finished image would look like one continuous arrangement instead of several separate stamped images.

Next, I stamped each drink in a different color. I made simple masks from Altenew Masking Paper so I could continue building the overlapping image while keeping each glass clean and separate. Once all of the drinks were stamped, I masked the entire arrangement and covered the background by swiping black ink directly from the ink pad across the panel. Around some of the intricate masked edges, the ink pad couldn’t quite reach, so I used a black marker to fill in those tiny areas.

After removing all of the masks, I created the chalkboard effect by lightly swiping a paper towel dipped into Altenew Cloud White Pigment Ink across the black background. This leaves behind the soft, uneven white streaks that mimic a chalkboard that has been erased many times. To finish the look, I splattered the panel with Altenew Pure White Ink Spray for a little extra texture.

I mounted the finished panel onto a dark burgundy mat, wrapped a few strands of American Crafts Jute Basics Ribbon around the top, and adhered everything to a white card base. The simple layers keep the focus on the colorful drinks, while the chalkboard background gives the whole design a fun café-style feel.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, promotion, retirement, or another special occasion, this design works for just about any celebration and is especially nice when you need a more masculine card without sacrificing color or interest.
