Simon Says Stamp | Three Ideas For Christmas Background Stamp

Happy belated Thanksgiving! I hope you had good quality time with your family. Today I want to share three holiday cards featuring the Outline Merry Background Stamp from the recent Simon Says Stamp Holly Jolly Release.

The said stamp is a background one (as you can guess from its name and/or card pictures), I love working with such. So many techniques can be done using background stamps, good background stamp is definitely a cardmaking staple. So I have three ideas of how this one can be used.

FAUX CHALKBOARD

Some of you are probably tired to see chalkboard cards that I show in almost every single post. I’m sorry, but I’m not even sorry about that. As I mentioned often chalkboard designs and elements have a sweet spot in my heart (not just in cardmaking, but also in home decor, art etc).

To create the chalkboard look first I white embossed the background onto a black cardstock panel. I used my MISTI for stamping. After heat embossing with the background stamp still mounted in the MISTI I shifted the panel a bit in the MISTI base just a little bit to the right and top and stamped the background onto it with the white pigment ink. It gave this offset effect that you often can see in chalkboard art. And the last step of imitating a chalkboard is to smudge some white ink all around the panel.

Next I stamped, die cut and colored a wreath and added berries to it using the Nuvo Autumn Red Crystal Drops. Then I popped the wreath onto the panel and made a ribbon hanger which I attached to the back side of the panel. Which then was foam mounted onto a white card base.

Lastly I popped up a sentiment strip white embossed onto a red cardstock.

PAINTED SENTIMENT

One simple technique that can be applied to a background stamp is to color it. Since the background in question had Merry Christmas written all over it I decided to paint a sentiment out of it.

First I white embossed the background onto a kraft cardstock such way that Merry Christmas is located in the middle. Then I painted said phrase using acrylic paints. The chose acrylic paints as I was working on non white cardstock and wanted the colored piece to really stand out.

I did quite sloppy painting not caring much about staying within lines. Which was evened out later when I added white splatters onto the card.

At the end I wrapped red bakers twine around the panel in the top and bottom and foam mounted it onto a red card base.

MODERN CHRISTMAS TREES

For my last card I went with a simple modern holiday design.

First I white embossed the background onto a kraft cardstock and blended the white pigment ink around the panel edges.

The trees I cut out of a white and red cardstock using my trimmer and adhered them onto the panel.

After that I added a white splatters onto the panel.

The sentiment I white embossed onto a vellum strip and I added another vellum strip underneath to make it less translucent to avoid blending with the white trees. The sentiment strip I scored on the sized, folded and adhered to the back side of the panel. Which then was foam mounted onto a white card base.
