Black and Gold Altered Shoe

Hello friends,

Today will be a bit different. Actually several years ago such posts were somewhat regular on my blog. Back then I was all over the place. I started papercrafting as a scrapbooker, rarely making occasional cards. I tried different styles. My main passion was vintage (I’m still a vintage girl actually, you just don’t see it much in my works nowadays), shabby, mixed media. Altered Art also was one of my passions.

In fact I did a lot of altered art even before, back in times when I was into decoupage… on this point you already probably suspected that I tend to get into random hobbies. There were more than listed here, but I will tell about it the other time.

Anyways, I did some random altered art too. Using different objects to alter, mostly bottles, sometimes frames, there were a couple of boxes. And to be honest I’m not sure how this started… I do remember that I was entering a challenge, and the challenge was about a color combo. Pink and brown. But what made me think to choose a shoe as an object I cannot recall anymore.

Nevertheless, I altered a shoe for the challenge. And then my sister asked me to make one for her. I liked the process of working with this shape so much that I started altering more shoes. And I stopped only when got very serious with cardmaking.

One thing that is worth noting – I don’t use MY shoes for this. I don’t wear heels.

I get them at Payless ShoeSerouce. I buy the cheapest on a BOGO deal, so they’re like $5 a pair or smth.

Funny enough – the pins of my shoes from many years ago are still in top of my re-pinned objects. And I often see in “Pinterest recommended” altered shoes for me to try that were made after my pins. Very often with no credit given lol.

I already see that the intro is getting too big. In my defense – below won’t be many words. As I have to idea how to describe a mixed media project. I do it pretty well for cards (I hope). But with things like this… It’s mostly creating texture with stencils and die-cuts, painting and spraying-spraying-spraying.

So, recently I did make one more shoe again. For a Mixed Media show Altenew was attending. You may guess that the majority of supplies I used to it are from Altenew.

There is some texture added by applying texture paste through different stencils. The stencils design isn’t visible in the finished product almost ad it became a part of the background, I linked below those I used though.

I used many die cuts to add texture as well. Mostly using Altenew Rose Flurries 3D Die Set. This set has many floral dies of the size that worked perfectly for the shoe. I die-cut those out of a Tim Holtz Grunge Paper. Grunge paper is a “compressed and flexible thinner sheet of dingy material that can be punched, painted, inked, sanded, die-cut and grunged”. I love using it for such projects. It has some thickness to it and bends, which is especially beneficial for a shoe shape. With that being said – this paper is discontinued already. I just happened to have it from those time when I was doing Mixed Media on regular basis. I tend to stock up on things I’m using (or which I find interesting and MAY use some time). And even if I don’t need them anymore – I almost never get rid of those (because don’t have time or still have hope to use some time lol).

I was adhering the die-cuts along the whole shoe surface. As the shoe shape is complex – on this stage there were some adjustments to fit elements nicely. So the don’t stick out but kind of continue shoe shape. I also used small embellishments from the Reflection Scrapbook Collection. The big flower is made using dies from the Build A Flower: Peony Blossom.

After this step I painted everything with white gesso. White acrylic paint will totally on this step too. I used gesso as have a lot of it (for the same reason I described above). Altered Mixed Media black and gold shoe. Project by Svitlana Shayevich

This part was a long process as I had to paint one spot, let it dry and move to another spot. I couldn’t paint just the whole shoe (or even one half) at once as I needed some dried spot to hold it in my hands. And also then to rest it while drying.

And in some areas I did more than one layer of gesso. To coat completely original colors of the elements.

After that came the best part – adding color. I decided to make it in “Altenew brand colors” of gold and black. Using Antique Gold and Jet Black Ink Sprays. This process also was a bit long as I worked one area at a time.

After I covered the shoe with spray color completely I added splatters if black and gold sprays into the opposite areas (gold and black correspondingly). And that finished off my card shoe.Altered Mixed Media black and gold shoe. Project by Svitlana Shayevich

People often ask me (too often lol) if I wear those shoes. OF COURSE NOT! LOL!

First of all I don’t wear heels (I’m not a my own enemy). And I make one shoe at a time, I would be too bored to make a pair of the same ones.

On top of that – you may see that I add texture everywhere. Those I think would be impossible to wear even for a photo session in bed haha.

So to resume – not. I’m not wearing them. They’re purely a home decor objects.

Below I have several more close-up photos if you care to see all details.

I should say that I liked making the shoe again. Who knows, maybe I will make something similar soon. Especially as I have so many products that can be used in mixed media 🙂

If you want to see my other shoes you can find them by this tag.

Have a wonderful day!

Wow! That shoe is amazing. I love all the ways you got all the texture. I especially like the flower you added on the top of the toe section with the dies. You did Altenew
proud. Went back and looked at the others you made several years ago- pretty amazing. I for one, can’t see how anyone wears shoes that high, let alone how someone would ask you if you wear the altered ones. Of all your older ones, like the Shabby Chic one the best.

That is so cool. I enjoyed reading how, and the materials you used, to create this unique shoe! I didn’t know you created with mixed media until now and will have to look back to see more. I smiled about your stash of things you like and things you might use one day. I have one of those stashes too!
