Hi friends,
Today I want to share a card replicating one of my favorite looks – chalkboard. I was using amazing Studio Katia Together We Bloom Stamp Set here.
I started by cutting a panel out of black cardstock. It’s better to use a cardstock that has some texture for this technique. I was using pencils for coloring and they work better on a textured one.
Next I stamped an oval wreath using stamps from the set and white pigment ink. When I was working on the wreath after stamping each element I was covering them with masks, to prevent stamp overlapping.
After that I moved to coloring, using my Prismacolor Pencils. First I colored two flowers in red using pencils. For each petal I was filling its inside area with a white pencil, then colored with two shades of red (I did very basic coloring, from dark to light) and then traced the petal outlines with a white gel pen.
I want to point out that tracing petals is kind of important to do for each one right after coloring it. These flowers are not very big and some petals are pretty fine, outlines on the other hand are quite thick. If you cover all petals with pencil coloring it will be quite difficult to see where each petal is. It would rather look like a solid colored image.
After I colored a flower completely I added some details with a white gel pen. And by “some details” I mean that I covered petal with white strokes almost completely lol.
For the rest of the wreath I used a light version of the technique described above, skipping the red pencil coloring. First I covered all of them with a white pencil, then traced outlines with a white gel pen and added strokes with the pen as well.
Next I went ahead and blended some white ink in the middle part of the wreath. And white embossed a sentiment on top using stamps from Best Ever Stamp Set.
Lastly I adhered the panel onto a white card base.
I know that black cards can be intimidating for many. I really like working with dark backgrounds. But I don’t consider chalk like a dark background though, for me it’s just chalk. Like for example if you home decor shopping and want to buy lets say big letter L (for the last name of your family for example). And you see just a black letter and a chalkboard one. Wouldn’t they look and feel differently. A simple black letter may look too slick, or gloomy or even Halloweeny.. While a chalkboard one, having basically the same color, would look homish and trendy.
My point is – if you’re afraid of dark backgrounds, but want to try working with them. Start with chalkboard look. This technique is very simple. And it’s maybe not as trendy as it was a couple years ago, but chalkboard is classic and cozy and I believe is still here 😉

Hi, Love this card, I am LOVING the DARK background, you know some of my favorite cards that you have done are the ones with the Black or Darker backgrounds/cardstock. I use Black cardstock all the time for my cards, one reason is because I love the way it looks and two is because I love using my white gel pen to write my note to the person ( I would only do this to family), it comes out so cool against the black cardstock, lol. Thanks for the tips on coloring with pencils on black cardstock 🙂
