Yellow flowers always stand out beautifully against a dark background, and for this birthday card I paired layered blooms with a galaxy watercolor panel I already had in my stash. It was one of those backgrounds that had been waiting for the perfect project.
To coordinate with the background, I die cut all of the flowers from watercolor paper and painted them with watercolors as well. The soft variations in color give the petals a natural look while complementing the watercolor background.
The flowers were created using the Papertrey Ink Into The Blooms Die and layered with plenty of dimension before being tucked into clusters of leafy greenery. A simple white sentiment strip keeps the design clean and lets the florals remain the focal point.
To finish the card, I added white and yellow paint splatters across both the flowers and the background for a little extra texture and to tie all the watercolor elements together.
I still love the contrast between the bright yellow blooms and the deep galaxy background—it makes the flowers really pop while keeping the overall design bold and elegant.
