BUILD-A-GARDEN HAPPY BLOSSOMS AND EARTHENWARE VASES

This bold card features two new products: Build-A-Garden: Happy Blossoms and Earthenware Vases Die Set. My idea for this project was to create an image of florals arranged in a vase, with a floral “wallpaper” background behind it, almost like a styled interior scene.

I started by creating the main floral vase focal point using the Earthenware Vases Die Set. I die cut the vase from Crafty Necessities: Teal Cave cardstock. For the florals and branches, I used Blush cardstock for some pieces and Espresso cardstock for others.

To add more depth, I shaded the vase with Teal Cave Fresh Dye Ink and added shading to the pink floral die cuts using Blush Fresh Dye Ink.

Once everything was ready, I assembled the vase by tucking the floral die cuts into the slits created by the dies. This allowed the branches to sit inside the vase rather than just behind it, which made the whole element feel more realistic and dimensional.

Next, I moved on to creating the floral “wallpaper” background. I stamped the floral image from the Build-A-Garden: Happy Blossoms Stamp Set onto white cardstock using Teal Cave Fresh Dye Ink. I then colored it with the coordinating stencils, using pink inks from the Red Sunset Fresh Dye Ink Set and teal inks from the Sweet Dreams Fresh Dye Ink Set. For the pinks, I used Bluff and Rouge inks, and for the teals, I used Teal Cave and Galactic Stream.

After coloring, I die cut a mask for the floral image from masking paper using the Build-A-Garden: Happy Blossoms Die Set. I placed the mask over the main floral cluster and ink blended Galactic Stream Fresh Dye Ink around it to create the background. Once I removed the mask, there were some white areas left, both around the floral image and within the cluster itself. This happens because the die cut is slightly larger than the stamped image. I filled in those white areas using a Galactic Stream Artist Alcohol Marker so everything blended smoothly.

To prevent the teal vase from blending into the teal background, I cut a piece of vellum about a quarter inch smaller on each side than the wallpaper panel. I popped up the vase onto the vellum using black adhesive foam squares and then adhered the vellum layer on top of the floral background. The vellum helped soften the bold background while also creating a visual barrier between the vase and the wallpaper.

I then popped up the entire wallpaper panel onto a Teal Cave panel and adhered it to a white card base. To finish the card, I added several enamel dots from the Red Sunset and Sweet Dreams Enamel Dots sets. For the sentiment, I stamped one from the Build-A-Garden: Happy Blossoms Stamp Set using Espresso Ink onto Blush cardstock, die cut it with the matching die, and popped it up onto the card.

One thing worth mentioning is that adhering vellum can be tricky since adhesive can show through its semi-transparent surface. I placed adhesive behind the vase, florals, and sentiment since those areas are opaque. I also strategically placed the enamel dots so I could hide small dots of adhesive underneath them. This gave me enough secure adhesive points to attach the vellum without anything showing through.
