I made two cards for two upcoming seasons – fall and winter. And I used refills as liquid watercolor (I mean I wasnโt refilling my markers, Iโm not even close to that point when I need to refill them). As any other coloring media they can be used for coloring. But I decided to use a couple of liquid watercolor techniques to create backgrounds. I love making my own backgrounds.
FALL THANK YOU CARD
Making background for this card was both very easy and challenging. I totally forgot how pigmented this liquid watercolor is and added to much ending up with rather messy background and a lot of watercolor waste.
So I ruined several pieces before I got a grip of how much watercolor I need to add. So that was a challenging part. And by the way – when I say I ruined several pieces it doesnโt mean they went to garbage. Iโm saving them and can use later for die-cuts. You wonโt believe how wonderful die-cut sentiment you can get out of such ruined pieces.
And the easy part is that technique itself is very easy.
I was using Crimson, Autumn Blaze, Warm Sunshine and Moss watercolor liquids to make the background. I added tiny drops of each colors onto a watercolor panel all around it. There were maybe like 4-5 droplets of each and the distance between them was about 3/4 of an inch. So they were quite scattered.
Then I sprinkled the panel with clear water. Again it wasnโt a lot – maybe like 3-4 times in different parts of the panel. You donโt need to add a lot of water as may end up with a messy background as I did in the beginning. I was using a mini-mister bottle. Itโs a great tool to have in your stash if you ever spray anything. The amount of water from one spray is less than when you use a regular sprayer. And in this case I needed less water in each part of the panel when I was spraying.
Ok it was a mouthful for such simple technique. Nowadays Iโm not sure people even read blog post texts. But I like sharing my process.
So after spraying the panel the liquid watercolor started moving and blending together, covering the whole panel. Iโve helped to dry using my heat tool. Another tool which I recommend to have in your stash. Itโs meant to be used for drying backgrounds when similar techniques are applied. It doesnโt blow as much as an embossing tool and doesnโt move water around. Which can be helpful when youโre happy with when colors are now and just want to fix their position. If it makes sense.
To add interest to the background Iโve added splatters of Crimson watercolor as well as shimmery water (which I made by adding perfect pearls powder to a clear water, I store this mix in another mini-mister bottle).
After that I foam mounted the panel onto a white card base.
When you make a fall card you probably want to add fall leaves onto it. Me too! Since there was already quite enough fall colors on the background for leaves I decided to go white. Which is a bit not traditional, but hey! I love beating not traditional with my cards.
I white embossed several leaves from the With Gratitude Stamp Set and die-cut them using the matching dies.
After that I adhered them onto the card.
For the sentiment I die-cut a word thanks out of a white and Mirror Gold Cardstock, stacked them with a slight shift and adhered onto the card.
BUBBLE WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND
My next card is a winter one and it was so easy to make. I used an oldie but goodies technique which I knew when I was a kid. And I personally knew this technique used with an acrylic or tempera paint. I wanted to try it with liquid watercolor and totally am happy with the result.
So for this technique you need a small bowl (about a cup size and shape), water, liquid soap, liquid watercolor and a straw.
Depending of proportions the result will be different (color intensity wise). I filled my bowl to the half with water, added one โsqueezeโ of a liquid soap, and tree droplets of the Dessert Night Liquid Watercolor. Mix all ingredients together, inserted a straw into this mix and started blowing. Which created soap bubbles raising from the bowl. Then I took a watercolor panel and pulling of picked up these bubbles with it. When they went away I ended up with a fun bubble design. I did it several times until I covered the whole panel with bubbles.
This probably is better to be shown in a video, as usual I thought about it too late. Will try to make one if youโre interested.
I was impressed how just tree droplets of the liquid watercolor gave me decent amount of color.
Will be honest – I wasnโt sure this technique would work at all with watercolor. I was afraid I would need to use a lot of it to in diluted form it still creates color. But it would be a total waste. So I decided to sacrifice three droplets to see if it works. And it totally did! This watercolor is so intense!
Next time I want to try less water and maybe make several backgrounds for future. This time I made only two and there still was enough of mix left.
So after that I foam mounted the panel onto a white card base.
Then I die-cut several Layered Snowflakes and adhered them onto the card.
Next I die-cut a word Merry, adhered it onto a vellum strip, which in turn I adhered onto the card.
Lastly I popped up another part of the sentiment and called it a card.

Your cards both took my breath away! They are so beautiful. I love the Autumn and Fall colors, so the Autumn leaf card was very inspirational. But soft blue is one of my favorite colors, so the snowflake card was equally gorgeous. Thank you!

I totally still read blog posts and I am thankful there are still talented crafters willing to explain their techniques as I am still learning after being a card maker for 10+ years now! These cards are beautiful and I had never ever heard of the bubble technique before. And I appreciate the details on the trials and errors of your watercolor background. I will probably have a few of my own when I try this but I have better info to start out with than you did so it should go smoother. Though, I too like to use my “fails” for die cutting, so maybe I shouldn’t worry about getting it right the first time ๐
