Quick Last Minute Holiday Card Idea

Hi friends!

How do your holidays go? Mine are extremely busy!

My hubby and I were sick for a week at the beginning of December. And this week was enough to completely get behind our holiday plans.

Some may say that planning takes out joy of holidays. Well, not for me! If I don’t plan I feel anxious, can easily forget to do or enjoy something and will be disappointed after for months. It’s only several weeks and if you work full time (plus – long hours) there is almost no time left to enjoy the season. And after it’s over there is a year long waiting for the next time. And since I’m kind of ADHD, without planning it would be a disaster.

Anyways, I came to show you one quick and simple holiday card, which can be also easy mass produced. In case you still need ideas of last-minute cards.
I made it as GD for Woodcraft Store blog, it was a honor for me to be invited to join their Crazy Decemberrr event.

The idea of this card design had been in my head for a couple years. Red plaid design and dear antlers are one of those symbols, which immediately bring holiday associations and mood.

I will be honest – it’s not really my idea. I probably saw this design on a throw pillow or some other decor item in a decor magazine which I read a lot. After seeing it I thought that it could be a great card design and I had to do it one day. So two years later this day have come :)

I started off by making an A2 card base out of red cardstock. If you have red card base already this is even better!

Next I stamped Gingham Background in black to create mentioned holiday plaid.

Let’s have a moment and talk about this background. I’m a big lover and hoarder of background stamps. As I’m a technique crafter and backgrounds are often used in techniques. Although not all crafters are like this. Some can not like making own backgrounds and work with techniques. Or maybe like, but don’t buy many backgrounds as let’s face it – they’re not cheap.

But there are some designs which (depending on your style) can be staples and be applicable in many situations. I think this background is one of those.

You can create a holiday plaid using it in black on red. You can stamp it on white using a light ink for a spring or Easter look. Stamped red on white it reminds those classic diner tablecloth and totally applied to cooking theme.

Ok. Back to the card. Next I die-cut a deer head out of a white panel. This die is unfortunately unavailable now (I think I got it from eBay after it was discontinued). But for this design many other dies may work.

First of all you can have some other deer die. Also a Christmas tree, snowflake can work here. Or some big sentiment. Ifyou have Altenew Bold Alphabet Die Set or similar you can die-cut NOEL or MERRY out of a white panel. I wouldn’t recommend using very intricate sentiment dies, as through such die-cut openings stamped plaid design may not be seen. If you have an electronic cutting machine (Silhouette, Circuit etc.) you can cut out everything you want.

I stamped a sentiment below the negative die-cut and foam mounted the panel onto the card base. Which finished off the card.

I didn’t want to add any other elements, even small embellishments. I want it to be as plain and simple as possible. And reminding a throw pillow as much as possible lol.

Hi! Amazing card! I didn’t read anything about the deer. Is it a die? Or did you use a machine to cut it? Thanks. Love that background stamp also!

Thank you, Melanie. I did mentioned in the blog post that it was a die which I found on ebay and which is discontinued already. But many companies have similar dies. Hope this will help.
