Hi friends,
Today I’m honored to join Spellbinders August Blog Hop featuring two amazing collections: Inked Messages By Stephanie Low and Special Moments By Marisa Job.
You probably came from Desiree Kuemmerle blog. If not – you may consider starting from the beginning at Spellbinders and see what other designers have created. There are so many beautiful projects from talented designers. Also you on each stop you you have a chance to win a prize.
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
I had a blast playing with stamps from the Inked Messages Collection. Stephanie Low, the designer of this collection is an tattoo artist and the stamps are designed it tattoo style.
I don’t have any tattoos and don’t plan to have, but apparently Pinterest thinks opposite. At it keeps showing me tattoo designs in my feed lol. So I’m kind of familiar with the style, or trends if you will, of tattoo designs. One thing that I noticed is that it’s very common to add flowers behind …. well, behind literally everything. So did I for my first card.
First I made the bottle using Message In A Bottle Stamp And Die Set. I started by stamping the bottle parts using White Pigment Ink onto a SSS Black Cardstock. There are two stamps to stamp this bottle. The outer (the bottle itself) part and its “filing”. I planned to do white embossing on top later so needed to keep my stamps mounted onto my MISTI lid, which I used for stamping.
So I first placed my black panel into one corner on the MISTI and stamped the bottle. In this position of the MISTI it’s lid/door was opening to the left. And I left the stamp onto its lid. Then I turned and MISTI over (so the lid/door opened to the right) and stamped the inside part. Also leaving the stamp mounted after stamping. The A2 side of the MISTI allowed me to keep both stamps on the opposite edges.
With a mini stamp positioning tool you can do the same by working in “album” orientation, so the lid opens away from you. And shift a paper from one corner to another for each stamp.
Next I colored the inside part of the bottle using Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils. Let me tell you … there are so great! It took me a while to splurge on them, mainly because I already had another pencils. And didn’t use them much. And after I finally got them it was I believe like half a year ago and I hadn’t opened them since then. For this card pencils were the only option and it was a great opportunity to try “new” babies. It was a live from the first stroke! They ARE as good as they’re being faced about.
So after I colored the bottle I placed my black piece back into the MISTI, stamped over with clear embossing ink and white embossed. Next I die-cut the bottle using the matching die.
I did all the same for the flowers, for which was used A Rose Any Other Name Stamp And Die Set.
Then I adhered the flowers behind the bottle and foam mounted the whole piece onto a Bazzill Licorice Twist Cardstock panel. Black adhesive foam squares were used for foam mounting to match the black elements.
Now, the question has to be asked why did I used two different black cardstock for different purposes. Well, I’m one of those people who like having different supplies for different purposes. Not even “like” rather – have to lol. Like I have separate tools for heat embossing and drying out a wet paper, I have a wide range of adhesives each dedicated to a specific role. The same with the black cardstock.
When it comes to coloring with pencils it’s better to use a cardstock that has some tooth to it. In other word – the rougher the cardstock the better. I really love Bazzill Card Shoppe Cardstock, it’s probably one one my favorite ones. I’m very picky when it come to cardstock, I love when it’s thick, as I use it for often for card bases and thinner cardstock bothers me in this role. So Bazzill totally fits the bill in this matter. But it’s smooth! Extremely smooth. And I like its quality too, in any other situation other than coloring with pencils. It’s next to impossible to color with pencils on it, as pencil pigment literally has nothing to hold on to. It isn’t completely impossible, but it will take you a lot of effort and pencil lead to do.
Why didn’t I used the SSS cardstock for both coloring and the panel? Well, definitely not because it wasn’t suitable for a card panel. This cardstock has tooth to it, so it’s very nice and easy to color on with pencils. And It’s quite thick (100lb actually) so totally works for both panels and card bases. I didn’t use it in this role I don’t have a lot of it lol. So I basically cherish it and save specifically for coloring. I probably need to go and get some more.
Ok, another question has to be asked – ain’t I’m talking too much about cardstock lol?
To finish off my card I foam mounted the black panel onto a white card base, popped a sentiment and added several white sequins to accentuate the card.
I like this kind of chalkboard (ish) look this card has. Not speaking of it’s boldness and drama which I love in cards.
WANDERLUST
For my next card I used Wanderlust Stamp And Die Set. It has two stamps which can be used not only on a card, but in a travel book too. Or any other travel related project.
I started making my card by stamping in black the globe with flowers onto a white cardstock, colored with COPICs and die-cut with the matching die.
Then I made a “galaxy slash night sky” panel by blending Salty Ocean, Wilted Violet and Black Soot Oxides onto a white panel. Which I then sprinkled with water using my trusty Ranger Distress Sprayer. I blotted off the ink after it reacted with water and added tiny white paint splatters with a small brush.
I foam mounted the panel onto a rustic white card base and popped up the globe onto it. Next I white embossed the sentiment on a black stripe and also popped it up onto the card.
Several sequins added finished off my card.

Boldness and drama are certainly good words for today’s post! Both cards are just amazing and I am ooohing and aaaahing over the depth of color. (and I totally understand about hoarding that special paper that you love. I actually have lots of different ones that I can’t “waste” using it for some other purpose that the one that I love that paper for.) Thank you.

Love the flowers peeking from behind the bottle.
I would love to get a tattoo but I’m chicken when
it comes to needles so I guess these designs
will have to substitute for my tattoo.
thanks for sharing

Both cards are stunning! I enjoyed your extra commentary on the cardstock LOL, I’m new to papercrafting so all the info I can get is good – anywhere, anytime hehe. I have been looking at colored pencils and was really liking the Polychromos but the price…… well you know LOL. Thanks to this post I know I need to keep saving and get them instead of going with something “lesser” lol. Thanks for the inspiration.
Svitlana Shayevich
Thank you, Mindy! I was hunting the pencils on Amazon for several months. I’m using Honey service which notifies when a certain product I’m interested in goes down. Usually this down time is a couple of hours and decision needs to be made quickly. But I was able to get them much cheaper than regular price (still a bit pricey though). But now I wish I never bought my other pencils, as loving Polychromos so much.
Mindy Drummond
Thank you, I am definitely going to check out the Honey service!! I’m just starting out in papercrafting so all the other mediums are keeping me busy LOL. This gives me time to look until I find a good price on the Polychromos. I’m glad you mentioned it in your post so I didn’t waste money or time learning them on any of the others. From what I’ve seen here and from some of the other bloggers the Polychromos put all others to shame hehe.

Hi, Thanks What a funny post today, you had me laughing so much as I was reading it and believe me I needed it today, extremely horrible day today for me. Your two cards are just AMAZING, I LOVE them, I would of never guessed you knew nothing about tattoo’s, you nailed it girl!! I just loved hearing you talk about your cardstock, embossing tool etc, that made me laugh so hard because it reminded me of myself, I am SO like that!! I am NOT saying your are, but I am OCD, I have been since I was a little girl, I drove my family crazy and now I drive my husband crazy, no actually he has learned to have extreme patience with my OCD, especially since our bulldog has seem to picked it up from me so he has to deal with the two of us, lol. Back to your beautiful cards, I always love when you use the black cardstock or color in the darker colors, those seem to be my favorite cards, you really put so much work into these cards and they came out beautiful. I do love the stamps you used they were very unique, I liked that about them. Thanks for a GREAT Funny post today, you made my day today and I really needed that.
