For my card today I used Tulip Stamp Set. It’s a great set that has both outline and layering stamps. And with such sets I usually opt for stamping. But since today we’re featuring coloring of course I colored the tulip which was stamped onto a Solar White Cardstock with Permanent Black Ink.
I used red markers Ruby Red R318, Coral Berry R304, Cotton Candy R403 for the tulip head and green Evergreen G554, Forest Glades G715, Frayed Leaf G702 for the stem and leaf. And initially I wanted my card to be very clean and simple. Just one proud tulip and a sentiment onto a white panel popped onto a white card base.
But it’s hard for me to stay purely clear so I decided to add some interest by making the panel narrower and popping it onto a gray card base… Theeen I thought – hm.. maybe I need to make a settled background on this card base?… By stamping just tulip outlines in some light ink. I stamped one tulip, placed the white panel on top to see how it looks and of course, because it’s me, that first tulip happened to be completely covered by the panel. Which was nothing to worry about, just another piece of work that is totally hidden in a finished project.
It’s not the first time for me but definitely one of the easiest. Usually I can spend HOURS stamping layers, masking or coloring to then cover a piece with some other element lol.
So it wasn’t a biggie. Will just stamp another tulip and see how it goes. But then I had a thought -“Since this first tulip will be covered anyways let’s try coloring it too and see how it goes”. And I tried and I couldn’t believe my eyes of how cool markers coloring on gray cardstock looked. I love using colored cardstock for many purposes. I like using it as a base to created a ink blended background (so I don’t need to bout down too much ink and work), I like color with pencils onto a non white cardstock. And it’s surprises me that I never tried coloring on a non white cardstock (unless I don’t remember it haha).
In general since ink in markers is dye coloring on non white surfaces isn’t a good idea. As dye ink is translucent and non-white cardstock would “eat” some color. In other word cardstock color will mix with your coloring and coloring will differ from if it was done on a white cardstock. For example coloring in yellow on kraft would look rather dull and faded out and coloring in yellow on brown won’t be visible at all.
BUT! Turned out that coloring on a somehow light color cardstock with the markers of similar shade create this very interesting sort of x-rays look.
I stamped away the whole card base with tulips and colored them all with warm gray markers Morning Frost WG01, Evening Gray WG03, Moon Rock WG05. Then popped up the white panel onto it and added several confetti to finish off the card.

Svitlana, what a great idea for a card using coloured pens. I certainly would have done as you did and choose to just do a single tulip on white card stock in beautiful colours. But what you have demonstrated is fabulous that you can actually colour on coloured card stock too. I am sure it is best to test this out on a tester piece of card stock before doing the actual image because as you say yellow on kraft etc may just disappear! But the greys looked amazing underneath the white card stock and I certainly will be trying out something similar to this in the near future. Thank you for sharing this with us crafters. xx
