Coloring with Distress Paints and Markers

Today I want to share two very simple cards made using Simon Says Stamp Suzy’s Fruit Puns Watercolor Paintable Prints. Which are high quality prints on Tim Holtz watercolor paper of inspirational sentiments and hand drawn images by Suzy Plantamura.

I never worked with such product before and it was an interesting experience. On one hand the step of creating a card design is taken out of the process. Since you have it printed on a watercolor paper and all I needed to do is to color. Which to be honest was kind of unusual for me. Since I like stamping and making up my own design. On the other hand, at least for me, a card that includes coloring can take quite a bit of time, since coloring isn’t always quick action. And when creating a design is taken out of the equation the overall time spent to make a card is shorter.

Not speaking of that designs of these cards are awesome and by any means I wouldn’t be able to create so good myself haha.

Also if you still want to do something more them just coloring you can cut elements out of these cards to be used somewhere else.

I made two cards to share with you today.

DISTRESS PAINTS

When it comes to coloring I don’t have a favorite medium. Being not a big colorist I get tired quickly if use the same coloring tool over and over again. Also depending on the final result I aim to get the choice of what to color with can differ as well.

Other then that I always am looking for a new medium for this task, again, to not get bored. For my first card I decided to go with Distress Paints. If you don’t know this yet I will tell you – I have an unhealthy relationships with anything Tim Holtz. So I have in my stash many products from his lines that initially are not intended to be used with clean and simple style. Some of them were purchased back when I was into mixed media (although I’d be into it currently as well, I just don’t have time for everything I’m interested in). And some of them were already bought after I committed to stay within clean style.

And now I may not use these products very often, but they come in handy when I’m looking for some fun and unusual medium to color stuff.

Distress Paints are opaque and thick paints, similar to acrylic ones. So coloring with them differs from watercolors of COPICs. I like that I can create visible brush strokes like if it was oil painting. And I usually feel like an oil painting artist lol.

So to make this card I simple colored apples first. I colored thick letter of the sentiment and then traced all others with a brush with paint on it. Finally I added some splatters with the same paints I used for coloring and adhered the card into a card base.

DISTRESS MARKERS

For my second card I decided to stay within Distress family and colored it with Distress Markers.

First I cut out the top part with the sentiment using Simon Says Stamp Card Curved Edge Die. I colored this part completely with markers and then highlighted some letters of the sentiment using white pen.

Then I colored the orange and its slices, adhered this part of cut cart onto a card base and foam mounted the top sentiment part.
